After a massive recruitment drive, David, the recently appointed HR manager at the BreathFresh mint factory, was tasked with booking health and safety training courses for all the new members of staff. David had never actually been in charge of the booking process before. He tried to rack his brain to remember who his predecessor had used.

How hard could it be?

He asked the other members of staff which provider they had used last. Nobody knew. Or rather, nobody cared. On closer examination David realised that the company’s health and safety culture needed some serious attention.

Ladders blocked the fire exits, loose wires dangled overhead and boxes balanced precariously on top shelves. Geoff, he had just discovered, would be on sick leave for the remainder of the week. He had attempted a two-man lift by himself which had left his back in spasm.

To make matters worse, when David started looking for courses, he found that there were over 1500 IOSH-registered safety training providers nationwide. How would he choose?

It would cost thousands to train every new member of staff, and David’s manager was already doubting if this was the best use of company time or money:

“Before health and safety, there was a thing called common sense!”

But as David rightfully pointed out, Geoff’s injury had just cost him 3 times the amount of this course in sick pay…

This article will look at what it means to be an IOSH certified course provider, and how to find the best IOSH training provider near you.

Choosing IOSH training providers

Who Can Teach IOSH?

IOSH, or The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, is the chartered body and leading membership organisation for health and safety professionals. This makes an IOSH certificate one of the most highly regarded in occupational health and safety.

But as David realised, there are over 1500 different providers all proudly brandishing their IOSH certification.

“What makes an IOSH certified training provider?” he wondered.

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health produces 11 different courses. Training providers can buy a license to teach one of these courses, which also gives them access to the most up-to-date training materials provided by IOSH. Alternatively, providers can submit their own more specialised courses to IOSH for approval.

David’s manager didn’t understand: “Surely anybody can buy a course and teach it – why does it cost so much?”

When you book an IOSH training course, you don’t have to worry that you might be splashing hundreds of pounds on little more than a pack of flash-cards and some highlighters. All IOSH trainers also have to meet the following standards:

  1. They are a Technical Member of IOSH.
  2. They must have an up-to-date CPD.
  3. They will have a Level 3 Adult Training Qualification on a regulated qualifications framework; OR have passed the IOSH Train the Trainer course.
  4. They must also have two years substantial face-to-face teaching experience.

So, to put it simply, IOSH trainers have not only been trained to deliver effective courses, but also have plenty of experience in teaching them!

IOSH training providers

Finding The Best IOSH Course Provider Near Me

“So if they’re all qualified and experienced teachers, how do I choose?”

IOSH may have given all of these training providers the green light, but there’s still some things you should keep in mind if you’re looking for the best training team for the job:

1) Teaching styles

The best safety training providers will understand that there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for training your team. Sitting through hours of powerpoint presentations isn’t for everyone. And nobody wants to learn the hard way (sorry Geoff!). So, perhaps you’d like a more interactive experience with practical exercises as well?

Health and safety doesn’t have to be boring. Chances are, if your colleagues enjoy the course, they’re also more likely to remember it and put the training into action. Check out some of our testimonials to get a feel for the atmosphere in our Grow Training classes!

2) Locations

David had just taken on a team of 30. Would he really have to organise transport for all of them to the nearest provider?

While we run regular courses at our Glasgow training centre, depending on the nature of your business and the number of staff that require training, this might not suit you. It shouldn’t have to feel like organising a primary school field trip where you hire a coach and remind everyone to bring their packed lunches. That’s why we also offer in-house training for your convenience.

But perhaps you’re too pressed for time to take even the morning away from the shop floor? With e-learning and blended learning, you can take a more flexible approach to learning and wrap it around your work day.

3) Reliability

Time is money. Our IOSH health and safety courses can take anywhere between 1 and 3 days to complete, which means if the provider cancels, it can be an expensive inconvenience for you. You might end up in a flap trying to rearrange your work rota to make room for all the employees who were meant to be on a training course, or face forking out for paid leave.

David hadn’t thought about this…

Unlike many other course providers, Grow Training guarantee that the course you have booked, regardless of the number of spaces filled, will always go ahead.

4) Tailored to your business

What John in the accounts department found useful probably wouldn’t have helped Geoff on the warehouse floor in this instance. Like David, you should look for a course which can be tailored to your specific needs and covers the relevant risk assessments. We use appropriate real life scenarios and interactive teaching styles to match our courses to your requirements.

5) Individual support

Maybe you’re still not sure what the provider meant by manual handling? Is it just lifting, or is  there more to it that people like Geoff should be wary of? All industries are guilty of creating overly complicated jargon to sound important, though sometimes there are simply no better ways to describe something.

If something confuses you, you should be able to ask! Finding a course provider that can explain things clearly is important, but you also need a tutor who is willing to take the time to go over any questions that might arise in the class, and even afterwards. We’ve had some great feedback on this front!

6) Quality learning experience

Pass rates matter. David was quite sure of this. But a 100% pass rate is no guarantee of a safer working environment. Employees need to leave with a renewed confidence in their ability to manage health and safety issues independently.

At Grow Training, we take pride in the fact that we employ some of the country’s most experienced and accomplished trainers, who have helped us to successfully deliver the IOSH Managing Safely, IOSH Working Safely and Refresher courses to thousands of managers and colleagues.

And our customers keep coming back!
