This post is for those who are currently preparing to take their NEBOSH NG1 examination with Grow Training.
We hope you’ve been enjoying your training so far and are preparing hard for your upcoming NG1 exam! It’s normal at this stage to be feeling a little nervous but there’s really nothing to worry about. This guide will give you all the information you need ahead of exam day.
Accessing the NEBOSH Exam portal
A few weeks before the exam, you’ll receive an email directly from NEBOSH with a link that gives access to the NEBOSH exam portal. In this email, you will be given instructions on how to setup your password. We recommend you access the portal a week or so before your exam date to get familiar with it prior to the exam dropping.
Important: If you don’t receive the email, or have difficulties in accessing the portal please let us know as soon as possible so we can look into it for you.

Completing the exam
The exam paper itself will drop on the exam portal at 11am on the exam day. From this point, you’ll be able to access and download it. You will have 24 hours to complete your answers, and upload them via the same portal. The deadline for submission is 11am the following day. We recommend you aim to upload your answer sheet at least 1 hour before this deadline, just in case you have any technical difficulties and require support.
After the exam
After completing your NG1 paper, you are required to attend a closing interview. This is a short 15-minute interview over Zoom, where you will be asked a couple of follow up questions from the exam. The closing interview is simply a plagiarism check that NEBOSH require us to conduct to ensure you completed the NG1 yourself without help. It’s a relaxed interview and nothing you should worry about. Please book your slot for this via Grow Academy.
Your results are expected around two months after your exam. Hopefully, this will be good news and you can start the celebrations! If, however you don’t pass, please don’t panic or be too disappointed. We’ll be in touch to go over your options with you at this stage, which includes the option to appeal the examiner’s decision if you feel they’ve been overly harsh, or to book you in for a resit.
Top Tips
Here’s our top advice for the exam day itself:
- Avoid having much (if anything) else scheduled on the day of the exam. You want to allow yourself as much time and space as you need to maximise your chances of success.
- Ensure you’re based somewhere quiet, that has reliable internet access and no distractions.
- Be prepared. The paper will drop at 11am. Have a good breakfast, get your workspace set up and put your phone on silent.
- We can assist you if you are having technical difficulties accessing or uploading the assessment. Sadly, we cannot offer you tutor support on the day of the exam.
- Remember that every NG1 is different! Carefully read each question and follow all the advice and guidance you’ve been given during the training.
- Stay calm! Often when people first read the scenario they don’t fully grasp it – especially if the scenario looks different to what you’ve seen so far on your training. However, the NEBOSH principals will be the same. We recommend you read the scenario a few times before attempting to answer the questions.
- Similarly, read each task a few times before attempting to answer. Be confident you know what is being asked.
- Check how many marks a question is worth. If it’s worth 10 marks, you should be making at least 10 distinct points/observations.
- If you haven’t already, you should read the NEBOSH ‘Scenario-based assessment guide for learners’ which. you can download here.
- For further advice and guidance you can review the NEBOSH ‘assessment learner guide’ which you can download here.
